This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
1 John 4:10

God's love doesn't need our participation to be effective. But when we love God in return, our minds and hearts open to Him so that we trust Him. With trust comes the calm assurance that the Lord is in control, and we are enabled to release our frantic efforts to make everything right by our own effort.
When we believe in Jesus Christ, we are saved, not because of anything we have done, but because of what He has done. We love because He first loved us (1 John 4:19).
The moment we take our eyes from Him we begin to panic. We think everything depends on us and even worse, we become fearful that other human beings can rob us of blessings God has ordained for us. Trust in His unfailing love provides what we need to walk in His will without stumbling.

But I trust in your unfailing love;
my heart rejoices in your salvation.
6 I will sing the Lord’s praise,
for he has been good to me.
Psalm 13:5-6
